The flag of Australia, often referred to as the "Australian National Flag," features a blue field with the Union Jack in the upper left corner which symbolizes Australia's historical ties with the United Kingdom. The large seven-pointed star below the Union Jack is known as the Commonwealth Star, which represents the unity of the six states and the territories of Australia. The five white stars on the right from the Southern Cross constellation which is a prominent feature in the southern hemisphere night sky. The flag flown today was officially adopted on April 8, 1954.
